Project Overview
Moore Construction delivered the design and build of a single-lane bridge over Balguerie Stream in Akaroa, providing critical access to multiple properties off Stony Bay Road.
The project required an integrated approach combining precast manufacturing, structural design, piling, and installation within a sensitive environmental setting.
Engineering Solution
The bridge structure comprises three precast pre-stressed Double T beams, forming a 14-metre span over the stream.
Each beam is 725mm deep and 2000mm wide, pre-stressed to approximately 360 tonnes to provide the required structural capacity to support heavy vehicle loads.
The beams are supported on cast in-situ concrete abutments, founded on driven steel UC piles to provide stability and long-term durability.
Precast Manufacturing
A key component of the project was the off-site fabrication of bridge elements in collaboration with Hi-Stress Concrete.
- Precast Double T beams manufactured off-site
- Integrated pre-stressing to achieve structural performance
- Use of temporary in-situ mould systems for efficiency
- Prefabricated kerbing components for rapid installation
Off-site manufacture improved quality control and significantly reduced on-site construction time.
Construction Delivery
The bridge beams were installed using a 120-tonne mobile crane, carefully coordinated to ensure safe lifting and accurate placement.
- Heavy lifting operations for 18+ tonne precast beams
- Precision placement onto abutments
- Grouted shear keys used to connect beams
- Formation of a 6-metre wide bridge deck
Project Challenges
- Working within a remote and environmentally sensitive stream corridor
- Heavy lifting and placement of large precast elements
- Coordination of off-site and on-site construction activities
- Ensuring structural performance for heavy vehicle access
Outcome
The completed bridge provides a durable and reliable access solution, capable of supporting heavy vehicle loads while maintaining structural integrity within a sensitive environmental setting.
The project demonstrates Moore Construction’s ability to deliver design and build infrastructure solutions using advanced precast technology.
